01About the Lab

No. The Lab is a community built around a structured skill system — not a course with videos and modules. There is no instructor delivering content at a fixed pace. You learn by doing, reflecting, contributing, and receiving feedback from other members. Think of it as a thinking environment, not a curriculum.

Joining the community platform requires a membership. This supports the infrastructure, the evaluation process, and the time mentors and contributors put in. We believe in a community that is small, serious, and sustainable — not free-for-all and shallow.

Most design communities are built around sharing work and getting likes. The Lab is built around developing the thinking behind the work. We have a structured skill architecture, a badge system based on demonstrated ability, and a level progression that requires evaluation — not just time or activity. It is slower, deeper, and more intentional.

You start at Level 01 — Starter Designer. You will orient yourself in the skill architecture, introduce yourself to the community, and begin working toward your first awareness badge. There is no rush. The Lab is designed for consistent, long-term growth — not a sprint to a certificate.

02Skills & Badges

Badges are earned by demonstrating understanding and application of a skill — not by completing content. Depending on the tier, you will need to submit written reflections, work samples, or evidence of applying the skill in a real context. The community and evaluators review submissions before badges are awarded.

Each skill has three badge tiers. Awareness means you understand what the skill is and why it matters. Applied means you have used the skill in a real situation and can explain your decisions. Advanced means you apply the skill consistently across contexts and can help others develop it.

Yes. There is no fixed sequence. You can pursue Awareness badges across several skills simultaneously, or go deep on one. The Lab is designed to accommodate different learning styles — just make sure depth is not sacrificed for breadth.

No. A badge you have earned reflects demonstrated ability at the time it was awarded. It does not expire. However, the Advanced tier requires sustained evidence — which means the community can see whether your recent work reflects that level of mastery.

03Levels & Progress

Levels are not automatically unlocked when you reach a point threshold. They are reviewed and approved through an evaluation process. You request a level review, and evaluators — including community mentors — assess whether your work, reflections, and participation demonstrate the required depth of thinking.

No. Points you have earned are a permanent record of your participation. However, points alone do not determine your level. You can have a high point total and remain at a lower level if your demonstrated design thinking has not progressed accordingly.

No. Each level builds on the one before it, and the requirements are designed to ensure genuine progression. You cannot skip a level, but you can move through levels faster if your work consistently demonstrates readiness. The pace is determined by your thinking, not a calendar.

04Joining & Participation

The Lab does not require a fixed time commitment. Some members are highly active; others progress more slowly. What matters is consistency and quality of contribution — not hours logged. Even a few thoughtful posts or submissions per week can build meaningful momentum over time.

There is no penalty for inactivity. The Lab is not a cohort with deadlines. You can step back and return when you are ready. Your badges, points, and level remain. Long-term members sometimes take breaks and return with renewed focus — that is a healthy pattern.

The Lab is deliberately kept small. Members are expected to engage thoughtfully — not just post and scroll. Conversations tend to be more analytical than typical design communities. If you are looking for quick validation or trend-chasing, this is not the right environment. If you want to think deeply about design with other serious designers, you will feel at home.
