How It Works / System Mechanics
A system designed for thinking.
Progress is not measured by how much content you consume. It is measured by how your thinking changes.
01 — The System
01
Skills
The Lab is organized around a structured skill architecture. Each skill represents a specific design ability, from visual foundations to context and problem-solving.
02
Badges
Badges are earned by demonstrating that you understand and can apply a skill — not just by completing content about it. Each badge has three tiers: Awareness, Applied, and Advanced.
03
Points
Points track your participation and growth. They are earned through badge achievements, work submissions, giving feedback, and community contribution.
04
Levels
Five levels reflect progressively deeper design thinking. Levels require both points and demonstrated skill application — they are approved, not automatically awarded.
02 — Badge System
Evidence, not checkboxes.
Badges are awarded when you demonstrate that you understand a skill — not just that you completed something about it.
Tier 1 — Awareness
You understand what the skill is, why it matters, and when it applies.
Tier 2 — Applied
You have used the skill intentionally in a real design situation and can explain your decisions.
Tier 3 — Advanced
You apply the skill consistently, adapt it across contexts, and can guide others using it.
03 — Progress System
1000 points. Five levels.
The Lab uses a 1000-point progression model. Points come from earning badges across different skills.
Important
Points alone do not unlock levels. Each level requires specific types of skill application.
